Skill Drip Videos
The Red Sox Foundation is working with the Center for Healing and Justice through Sport (CHJS) on a number of mini coach training videos. We are calling these short videos “skill drips” as they are less than 5 minutes and convey some great insights to help you coach. Skill Drip videos will contain a wide range of topics and even though they are focused in, most of the information may be transferable. Drills are integral to teaching the fundamentals of baseball and softball, and instilling core values of teamwork, respect and sportsmanship on and off the field, too.
We’re proud to offer a comprehensive database of drills, highlight a drill of the month and share best practices to strengthen the impact we’re making, together.
Drill of the Month
Jackie Robinson broke the major league baseball color barrier in 1947 and went on to have a memorable 10-year career winning rookie of the year, a most valuable player award, and becoming a 6-time all-star. In 1949, he led the league in stolen bases as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the same year he won the MVP award. Known as one of the most exciting players to watch, some of Jackie’s highlights includes the numerous times he stole home plate. His first successful steal of home plate came in 1947 and he ended his extraordinary career with 19 home plate steals.
In celebration of Black History Month and Jackie Robinson, check out this great baserunning drill that can help build a player’s timing, explosiveness, and quickness.
Drill: Tennis Ball Drop
Age Range: 12-18
Type: Baserunning
Setup:
Players line up at 1st Base – one at a time
A coach will stand about 10-20 feet ahead of the runner directly towards 2nd Base holding a tennis ball at chest height
Instructions:
Runner takes lead off base (or ready position for softball)
Coach will drop the ball and let it bounce on their mark
The runner explodes towards 2nd base and attempts to grab the ball before it bounces twice off the ground
Adjust distance between coach and players or height of release point depending on athlete’s level of quickness
