RED SOX FOUNDATION RECEIVES $500,000 GRANT FROM “WELCOME BACK VETERANS” TO SUPPORT THE HOME BASE PROGRAM

BOSTON, MA – The Red Sox Foundation today announced that it has received a $500,000 grant from “Welcome Back Veterans,” an initiative of Major League Baseball and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation that helps veterans and families of veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries.

The grant will support Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program, the first and largest private-sector clinic in the nation devoted to healing the invisible wounds for post-9/11 veterans, service members, and their families.

“We thank Major League Baseball and the McCormick Foundation for recognizing the urgency of this critical issue, and for their generous support of Home Base,” said Tom Werner, Red Sox Chairman and creator of Home Base. “We have made tremendous progress since the Home Base Program opened its doors eight years ago, but with nearly three million post-9/11 veterans across the country, there are many more men and women who need our help. This donation will go a long way in aiding our efforts to reach more veterans and their families in New England and across the country.”

“We are grateful for Major League Baseball, the Red Sox Foundation, and caring fans who have stepped up and given generously to help veterans and their families lead healthy and successful lives after their service to our nation,” said David Hiller, President and CEO of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

Since its creations in 2009, Home Base has served over 11,000 post-9/11 veterans and their families with clinical care and support. The clinic expanded its services nationally in 2016 with the launch of a two-week Intensive Clinical Program (ICP) for veterans living in both New England and across the nation. Since the launch of the ICP, veterans from 35 different states have been treated by Home Base.

“We are sincerely grateful to Major League Baseball, the McCormick Foundation and the Red Sox organization for their steadfast support of our mission,” said retired Brigadier General Jack Hammond, Executive Director of Home Base. “Thanks to generous donations such as this, our brave military families can heal from unseen injuries including post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, substance use issues, depression, anxiety, and military sexual trauma.”
