RED SOX FOUNDATION EXTENDS SUPPORT OF LITTLE LEAGUE TEAMS TO RHODE ISLAND AND MAINE

Expansion in Partnership with the PawSox Foundation and Sea Dogs Foundation

BOSTON, MA – The Red Sox Foundation today announced that it will extend its support of Little League teams beyond the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to include all teams in Rhode Island and Maine. The expansion is in partnership with the PawSox Foundation in Rhode Island and the Sea Dogs Foundation in Maine.

The 48 Little League teams in Rhode Island and 69 teams in Maine will be provided with funding assistance as well as leadership and instructional skills training for coaches and administrators in the fall. The expansion in the two states represents support of more than 2,225 teams and over 30,000 children ages 5 to 16.

“We are pleased to partner with our Double-A and Triple-A affiliates to support Rhode Island and Maine Little League teams,” said Red Sox Foundation Board Member Mike Egan.  “I know firsthand how important it is to provide the coaches and staff members who run these programs with resources and support so their time and energy can be focused on teaching our children the fundamentals of the game. We look forward to working with the 317 Little League teams who are now supported by the Red Sox Foundation, including the 200 teams in Massachusetts.”

Little League State Tournaments for both Rhode Island and Maine are scheduled to take place this Saturday, July 22, in Johnston, RI, and Westbrook, Maine, respectively. The tournaments are sponsored by the Red Sox Foundation and their affiliate in that state.

“As Rhode Island’s professional baseball organization, we are eager to embrace and enhance our support of the Ocean State’s Little Leagues,” said PawSox President Dr. Charles A. Steinberg.  “We are continually inspired by the commitment of coaches and administrators who devote so many hours to our children, and we are constantly gratified to see these children learn the lessons of life that baseball can teach.”

“The support of the Red Sox Foundation, PawSox Foundation, and its partners on the Rhode Island Little League program is real and tangible,” said Rhode Island Little League Board Member John Pesaturo. “The sponsorship that is available to each league provides them with funding along with opportunities for teams to come to Fenway Park, and for some, a special mascot visit to their home town. Chartered Leagues from Providence to Newport are enjoying a new connection as part of ‘Wally’s Team’ thanks to the Red Sox Foundation.”

“We are grateful for the efforts of the coaches and administrators of Maine Little League who volunteer countless hours to enhance the little leaguers’ experience and advance the game of baseball for our youth,” said Portland Sea Dogs Executive Vice President and General Manager Geoff Iacuessa.

“Maine’s six Little League districts, representing over 69 leagues statewide, are honored and very appreciative of the Red Sox Foundation and the Portland Sea Dogs’ support of the Maine State Little League Tournament,” said Maine Little League Board Member and District Administrator Michael Brooker. “Their support will benefit all of Little League baseball in Maine, and help provide for a great State Tournament in Westbrook.”
