Red Sox Scholars

Making College Dreams Come True for Boston Students

The Red Sox Scholars Presented by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is an award-winning program run by the Red Sox Foundation.

The Red Sox Scholars is a college scholarship and enrichment program managed by the Red Sox Foundation. The program was created in 2003 under the leadership of Principal Owner John Henry, Chairman Tom Werner, and President & CEO Emeritus Larry Lucchino as part of their commitment to be active participants in the community.  The program was run by the Boston Red Sox Community Relations department, selecting twenty-five (25) fifth-grade students to receive scholarships, until the Red Sox Foundation assumed responsibility in 2007.  In 2011, the Red Sox Scholars program reduced the number of Scholars in each new class to ten (10), selecting them in the seventh grade.  In 2016, the program transitioned into its current form when Ms. Doris Buffett and the Letters Foundation committed to supporting an additional two (2) Scholars – “Sunshine Scholars” – per year.

Red Sox Scholars are selected in the spring of their 7th grade year. The programming for our newest class of Scholars focuses on participating in community service activities, encouraging strong academic habits, and navigating the high school application process. As Scholars advance through high school, the focus of the program shifts to preparing our Scholars for job opportunities and helping them to navigate the college application and financial aid processes. In college, the Red Sox Foundation connects with Scholars to determine their scholarship disbursement schedule, prepare resumes, and position themselves to succeed post-graduation. We are honored to help support Boston’s talented youth achieve their goals.

In 2010, the Foundation’s Red Sox Scholars program was recognized by Major League Baseball with the first-ever “MLB Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence.”

Our Red Sox Scholars come from diverse backgrounds and have demonstrated perseverance in the face of many challenges, and we couldn’t be more proud of them!
