The Dimock Center in Roxbury is recognized nationally as a model for annually providing health and social service programs to more than 20,000 patients and clients representing a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Founded in 1862, Dimock was the training ground for the first professional nurse in America, the nation’s first African American nurse and one of the first hospitals headed by a female doctor. Today, Dimock serves as a lifeline for many low income families of color.
When Boston Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry first visited Dimock, he spent several hours touring the facilities. Since then, the Red Sox Foundation has partnered with Dimock to support their comprehensive health and human services. Dimock has also been the site of several Red Sox Foundation Nation Service Days, including a major overhaul of a children’s facility and Dimock’s drug detox center.
